Along the way we stop at Tim Horton's, where they managed to apply industrial par-baking to ensure that no matter where you go in Canada you are ensured a homogenized, half-stale and stunted donut. Too bad they haven't been able to control the quality of coffee – in the past two weeks we have experienced good, bad and terrible from St. John's to St. Andrews and back again. You never know which you are going to get.
We also stop at the Commonweath War Graves in Gander, where commonwealth war dead are buried. Most are airmen killed in and around Gander in WWII flying accidents, many in their early twenties and far from home.
Just a little bit further down the TCH is a memorial called “Silent Witness”, on the site of the plane coach isn 1985 that killed 248 members of the US 101st Airborne Division. It is a beautiful but haunting place, still visited by family and friends of those who lost their lives, and people like us just wanting to pay our respects.
We also stop in Trinity, a beautiful little town hunkered down in a cove, with houses clinging to the hills and rocks. We ate lunch here in a little cafe – Andrea had fish chowder and I had a moose burger. It is a great place for a walk around the tiny streets, peeking into the historic churches, and admiring the old homes and fisherman's shacks. I forgot to take some pictures with my phone… sorry!!
At 4pm we arrived in Bonavista, and we have rolled past 3445km during our time here on “The Rock”. Bonavista is, well, gorgeous. It is going to be a wonderful couple of days here…
We had dinner at Walkham's Gate Pub & Café, a great little place on Church Street, full of character and locals. We shared the fish cakes (delicious) and Mac & Cheese (also delicious), and washed everything down with Quidi Vidi (Andrea likes the QV IPA, and I like the QV 1892). Tomorrow we plan on exploring. Bonavista gains its fame as being the first landfall for Giovanni Caboto, back in 1497, which was along time ago!
